As women’s fiction – not romance – this book earns four stars. If you accept that this story will not have the requisite romantic HEA, it is an enjoyable read with a satisfactory conclusion. We can put the book down when it is finished and not feel frustrated. This is the first book in a series so there are more stories to follow, but since we are not left with a cliffhanger, we don’t feel the anger of being cheated. We can elect to read more without feeling compelled to do so.
RANDOM is told in first person present tense. But unlike some novels similarly written, this one works. There is no discomfort traveling the journey with the heroine. As a character she is well developed. We understand her motivation. We experience the many trials she faces. Since the other characters are perceived exclusively from her point of view they are necessarily less fully developed but we still see them as distinct individuals. The book is professionally written and edited. I read the e-book.
If the book has a shortcoming it is a period of boredom toward the end. Vicariously experiencing someone else’s sexual escapades is interesting only in small doses. As I neared the end of the book, I skipped some pages because I was bored reading about yet another of the heroine’s climaxes. There are graphic sex scenes in RANDOM. If this is not your thing you won’t like the story. Similarly, RANDOM is not erotica. This is a real story with real plot points and characters moving forward with their lives.
I was provided with a free copy of this book in return for an honest review.
